Two-Week Wait Symptom Guide
What's really happening day-by-day after embryo transfer, what symptoms mean, and how to survive the wait without driving yourself crazy.
What symptoms should I expect during the two-week wait after embryo transfer?
Most symptoms in the TWW are caused by progesterone, not pregnancy. Common experiences include bloating, breast tenderness, fatigue, mild cramping, and mood swings—all normal whether pregnant or not. True pregnancy symptoms rarely appear before 10-12 DPT. The absence of symptoms doesn't mean failure; many successful pregnancies have no early symptoms.
The hard truth about TWW symptoms
Almost every symptom you'll experience is from progesterone, not pregnancy. The same symptoms happen whether the embryo implants or not. This guide helps you understand what's normal so you can stop googling and start breathing.
Day-by-Day: What's Happening After Transfer
This timeline is for 5-day (blastocyst) transfers. For 3-day transfers, add 2 days to each milestone.
Transfer Day
What's happening:
Embryo placed in uterus. It's floating freely, finding the best spot to attach.
Common symptoms:
Mild cramping from catheter, bloating from full bladder, relief it's done
💡 Tip:
Rest today. No evidence bed rest helps, but take it easy for peace of mind.
Symptom Decoder: What They Actually Mean
Stop symptom-spotting. Here's what each symptom really indicates (hint: usually nothing conclusive).
Cramping
Usually progesterone or uterus adjusting. Rarely felt from implantation itself.
Spotting
Could be implantation, could be meds, could be nothing. Not reliable either way.
Bloating
Very common from progesterone. Happens whether pregnant or not.
Breast tenderness
Progesterone effect. Not a pregnancy indicator during TWW.
Fatigue
Progesterone is sedating. Many women feel exhausted regardless of outcome.
Nausea
If appearing after day 10, could be early pregnancy. Before that, usually meds.
No symptoms
Completely normal. Many successful pregnancies have zero early symptoms.
Heavy bleeding
More concerning. Contact your clinic if bleeding is like a period.
Severe pain
One-sided or severe pain should be reported immediately.
TWW Survival Tips
Limit Googling
Set a timer. 10 minutes of symptom-searching max per day. Then close the browser.
Gentle Movement
Light walks help with bloating and anxiety. Skip intense workouts.
Stay Busy
Schedule activities, especially in week 2. Distraction is your friend.
Queue Entertainment
Have shows, books, or podcasts ready. Light content that absorbs attention.
Find Your People
Connect with others in TWW. Reddit, forums, or real-life IVF friends who get it.
Practice Acceptance
The outcome is decided. Worrying won't change it. Focus on what you can control: rest and self-care.
About Home Testing
Earliest reliable: 9-10 DPT
For 5-day transfers. Some show earlier, but negatives before this are often wrong.
Use first morning urine
Most concentrated HCG. Don't drink excessive water beforehand.
Pink dye tests preferred
FRER, easy@home pink. Blue dye tests have more evap line confusion.
Read within time window
Usually 3-5 minutes. Lines appearing after 10 minutes are not valid.
